misteravid: I have always hated the way we report news. It is vastly unfair to Muslims. As I said in a previous post: It pains my ear how they report such things on local news too, if a crime was committed by a Muslim, they are quick to point it out like “Isang Muslim ang nangholdap ng banko!” yet we never hear “isang Kristayano ang nang rape ng bata!”. It’s stupid & irresponsible.

And in my own opinion, those text polls are made just for money. Well, pagkakakitaan pa yan ng network.

Land of Bondage, Land of the Free by Raul S. Manglapus

pinoytumblr:

Once upon a time, the tao owned a piece of land.  It was all he owned.  But he cherished it, for it gave him three things, having which, he was content: life, first of all; and liberty, and happiness.

Then one day the Spaniard came and commanded him to pay tribute to the crown of Spain.  The tao paid tribute.  And he was silent - he was certain that he was still the master of his land.

The Spaniard became rich.  But with riches, evil entered into him and he came to the tao a second time.  He read to the tao a formidable saying, “According to this decreto real, which unfortunately you cannot read, this that you have been paying me is not tribute but rent, for the land is not yours but mine.”  The tao paid tribute and said nothing.  He ceased to be a freeman.  He became a serf.  Still the tao held his peace.  The rent went up and up.  The tao starved.

And this time at last he spoke.  Not in words, but with that rustic instrument with which he cleared the land once his own - the bolo.  He transformed it from an instrument of tillage to an instrument of death, and with it drove away the stranger.  Then he returned to his field saying, “Now indeed shall I again be master of this land, once my own, but stolen from me by the trickery of quicker wits than mine.”

But the tao was wrong.  For the land had another master.  This time not a stranger, but his own countryman grown rich.  The tao had a new name, kasama, which to us means partner, but which to the tao meant still a slave, for once more he suffered from his countrymen the same things he had suffered from the stranger:  the rents, the usury, and all the rest of it.

Yes, the tao returned to his field thinking that he was free.  But he soon discovered that he was still a prisoner.  His prison, a two-room shack, rent by every wind, without any comforts, except three families have there the privilege to starve.  The tao’s home has become his very prison.  Its doors, if you can call them such, are wide open.  It is a prison nonetheless.  For the tao is bound to it, not with chains of steel, but with a stronger chain - his honor.  To this day, the tao remains a slave, a prisoner of the usurer.

No wonder then that tao, being a slave, has acquired the habits of a slave.  No wonder that after three centuries in chains, without freedom, without hope, he should lose the erect and fearless posture of the freeman; and became bent, misshapen, indolent, vicious, pitiful thing that he is!  Who dares accuse him, who dares rise up in judgment against this man, reduced to this sub-human level by three centuries of oppression.  The tao does not come here tonight to be judged - but to judge!  Hear then his accusation and his sentence:

I indict the Spanish encomendero for inventing taxes impossible to bear.

I indict the usurer for saddling me with debts impossible to pay.

I indict the irresponsible radical leaders who undermine, with insidious eloquence, the confidence of my kind in our government.

You accuse me of not supporting my family.  Free me from bondage, and I shall prove you false.

You accuse me of ignorance.  But I am ignorant because my master finds it profitable to keep me ignorant.  Free me from bondage, and I shall prove you false.

You accuse me of indolence.  But I am indolent not because I have no will, but because I have no hope.  Why should I labor, if all the fruits of my labor go to pay an unpayable debt.  Free me from bondage, and I shall prove you false.

Give me land.  Land to own.  Land unbeholden to any tyrant.  Land that will be free.  Give me land for I am starving.  Give me land that my children may not die.  Sell it to me, sell it to me at a fair price, as one freeman sells to another and not as a usurer sells to a slave.  I am poor, but I will pay it!  I will work, work until I fall from weariness for my privilege, for my inalienable right to be free!

BUT IF YOU WILL NOT GRANT ME THIS.. If you will not grant me this last request, this ultimate demand, then build a wall around your home.  Build it high!  Build it strong!  Place a sentry on every parapet!  For I who have been silent these three hundred years, will come in the night when you are feasting, with my cry and my bolo at your door.  And may God have mercy on your soul!

TEDxDiliman 2011
It’s interesting to note that Pat Evangelista’s quote was skewed more towards the negative — think in the context of the brutality and unjustness of the Maguindanao massacre — but wouldn’t you like to think that its positive meaning also stands true?
// TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — a global conference that brings together the world’s thought leaders, innovators and artists, discussing the future and making the world a better place. Noble and Ever Loyal City: The Classic Filipina Beauties

theurbanhistorian:

The first Golden Age of Philippine Cinema was in 1950s - 1960s. It closely followed en route the Hollywood line but it has maintained a distinct flavor. Before Nora Aunor broke into the scene, the industry was mainly for mestizas only, but these mestizas became the…

Manila - Awfully Disappointing

theurbanhistorian:

http://www.travelblog.org/Asia/Philippines/Metromanila/Pasig/Ortigas-Center/blog-642646.html

Have you already read this piece written by a Brit working for Asian Development Bank in Ortigas awfully bashing the state of our city especially NAIA and Discovery Suites? I don’t know but the British People have a highly bloated sense of racial superiority (take note that they still rule half of the world) that’s why they think they are entitled to their opinion.

But to stick to reality, he hasn’t been out of his shell at NAIA and Discovery Suites. I even don’t think he knows Manila much more than a real curious tourist. That’s why his concept of Manila is lacking (I think he hasn’t even been to Intramuros for once, maybe we could give him a free tour of the Walled City).

In the other side, what he has said about Manila is true: It has fallen from grace, dingy and dirty. A decade ago, Hollywood Actress Claire Danes said Manila smelled of cockroaches, with rats all over and there is no sewerage system and many more. She got a non-persona grata which I think is still stays to this day.

That is the problem with Filipinos: We are escapists. What the two foreign personalities said is true, and instead of attending to it, we dismissed the remarks as racist. When Claire Danes said our city smelled of cockroaches, we should have cleaned our city but no, we continued by our crooked ways.

I think we could not leave this by itself anymore. The problem is right within our noses and is already overwhelming us, not that we are attending to it, but we chose to leave it and get worse by itself. It’s not Manila that is awfully disappointing, but it is the people who don’t even care and give a damn about it.

PS: Maybe he should also try visiting DMIA.

There was a time when my facebook notification was popping non-stop because I was invited to join a group called “You know you’re a Cebuano if..” and when I went through the group’s page I just found witty, naughty, corny but generally funny answers to that open-ended question that entertained me. Now, it has sprawled to different version like “You know your Davaeño if”, “You know you’re Bicolano if”, “You know you’re Atenean if” and many more.

According to its creator Jo Cajita, he started the group because he wanted to talk about his childhood and what he and his friends misses about Cebu. Filipinos are nostalgic by nature, maybe because the famous Filipino proverb “Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinang galingan ay hindi makararating sa pinaroronan” was profoundly instilled in us, thus why the group was such a hit! Everyone can relate to it!

Now because the Philippines has 7,107 islands (depending on the tide), I wanna know what’s so distinct about your region/school/barangay and its people. Ready?

From Facebook let this phenomenon reach the Tumblr shores and answer this question…. You know you’re a (insert your region/school/province) if…

*Shirt is a design of Islands Souvenirs

You Know you’re a Cebuano if… naka tilaw naka og Mom’s pizza!

Now your turn!!!

Reblog with your own answers (for your region) and we’ll post the roundup on PinoyTumblr (keep it clean!).

You know you’re a Libmaneño kung “Ha?” ang simbag mo dawa nadangog mo.. (HAHA, Libmanan is a town in Camarines Sur)

misteravid: If I am to believe my FB feed, people are more saddened by the passing of Steve Jobs than the effects of the Typhoon that just passed, all the people it killed & have left homeless. It’s a weird world we live in, where we have more sympathy to the smart man who sold us expensive (but useful) products than people in a state of calamity. I felt really guilty when a friend said “porke ba walang Cristine Reyes na stranded sa bubong hindi na big deal ang Bulacan?”.

The Proposed New Roxas Boulevard Sea Promenade
Since the old Baywalk was destroyed by Pedring, the government (I don’t know who is spearheading this) is proposing a new seawall (a double seawall as the design said). This will not cost 30 million as initially estimated.
But being an engineering student, I would lend some unsolicited advices to the government agencies attached.
No lollipop street lights please. This is a must.
Blend the architecture to the Intramuros - Luneta - design, should be of the Old Manila designs rather than the modern and contemporary designs.
The structure must be designed against very strong waves, very strong earthquakes, weather is really bitchy right now. The first seawall constructed in the 1960’s isn’t designed for these extreme conditions.
And yes, the majestic view of the Manila Bay sunset must be preserved dearly.
The government has a chance of making a good tourist attraction in Manila. Please do not blow this chance.

DPWH Photoshop Failby Pierre Albert San Diego
I’m a civil engineer by profession and I love my job and if there’s one thing I hate it’s people that fabricate their inspection reports. Why? Inspection reports are very important in our field, if the inspection report is erroneous, this might lead to a wrong and/or costly design. Aside from that, it might lead to a very difficult project implementation, and worse, not prepare others from potential safety risks of the site.
Which is why  I was uber-pissed when I was checking my updates in FB at around lunch time yesterday and I saw this.
Now, if you didn’t have knowledge in Adobe photoshop, you would’ve just glanced at it and moved on with your life, but I’ve used the software since I was in high school (I’m 30 now) so I kinda noticed something weird.
